Multidimensional Resourcing for Transcoding
An SDVI guest blog post by Jean-Louis Lods, VP Media Supply Chain Solutions, ATEME
Demand for content processing continues to grow across the media and entertainment industry, driven by ever-increasing quality requirements (HDR, 4K, 8K), new delivery platforms, new D2C services, and new consumption devices. With best-of-breed next-generation supply chains being designed and deployed to cater to this ever-increasing demand, there’s much more than just media formatting to consider when it comes to optimizing those supply chains. Beyond the pure volume of media, other factors such as versions, time-to-market and compute resources need to be managed. The integration of TITAN File with SDVI Rally provides a Swiss army knife of tools to optimize these dimensions and deliver a modern, cloud-native media supply chain.
With Rally understanding the dimension of time - when and where does this asset need to be available - the tight integration of Rally with the TITAN File API can enable the Emmy® award-winning distributed transcoding feature to scale up or down, making full use of elastic cloud resources. For example, when a 4K HDR asset requires a quick turnaround, Rally can define the number of segments the asset should be divided into and then TITAN File will manage the spinning up and down of the required parallel transcoders, allowing a one-hour file to be delivered up to ten times faster than normal.
However, the technology runs deeper than just splitting and stitching: you want to apply intelligence to the process based on the content itself. We call it Artificial Quality Intelligence or AQI, ATEME’s second of three Technology & Engineering Emmy awards received in 2021. With AQI, ABR ladders can be constructed more efficiently, particularly when they are combined with ATEME’s intelligent scene-change-detection algorithms which align the fragment boundaries of ABR encodings with scene-change boundaries, resulting in the added benefit of minimizing the use of I-frames. These techniques result in fewer variants and/or lower bitrates for each variant. That means lower storage space (up to 50%) and less CDN bandwidth usage as well as better use of CDN edge caches, resulting in fewer unwanted pauses on the player. Finally, this intelligent encoding reduces your carbon footprint and increases your business sustainability and green credentials.
While the above example focuses on OTT, TITAN File in combination with Rally is designed to support all workflows. TITAN File is a multi-codec/multi-format micro-services video-transcoding software solution for mezzanine, set-top box and ABR VOD, post-production, playout and archive applications, and it has integration for conditional access, digital rights management, forensic watermarking and Digital Ad Insertion. With Rally, TITAN File is truly that Swiss army knife that allows customers to create flexible, multi-function media supply chains.
